A First-of-its-Kind Collaboration Brings College-Level Opportunities from Two Institutions to Saint Joseph High School Students in West Virginia
Martinsburg, WV – Saint Joseph High School (SJHS) is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Shepherd University and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, setting a new standard for high school education in the state of West Virginia. This innovative collaboration will allow 11th and 12th grade SJHS students to take college-level courses, participate in hands-on career training, and explore creative pursuits—all included in their SJHS tuition.

“This partnership represents a monumental leap forward for high school education in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia,” said Deacon Patrick Michel, Head of School for Saint Joseph High School.
“We’re giving our students the tools, experiences, and opportunities they need to thrive in both academic and career settings. It’s not just about preparing them for the next step; it’s about helping them take that step while they’re still with us.”
Jennifer Hornyak, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleton said “Catholic education has a well-deserved reputation across the state of West Virginia centered around religious formation and proven academic excellence. This unique partnership will provide many opportunities to challenge our students to recognize, develop and share their God-given gifts and talents”.
Education That Goes Beyond Ordinary
At SJHS, we believe that education should inspire students to explore their potential and prepare them for a world of possibilities. This partnership is a reflection of that mission. By working closely with Shepherd University and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, we’re opening doors that allow students to explore interests in workforce skills or academic pursuits. SJHS Crusaders will have access to 100 and 200-level courses, fine arts programs, and trade skills training while still in high school.
What This Means for Students
This partnership is designed to give students a head start on their futures—academically, professionally, and personally. Here’s how:
College Courses, Now
Through this collaboration, SJHS students can enroll in college-level courses offered by Shepherd University and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. Imagine tackling advanced classes like psychology, business, or computer science before you even graduate high school. These courses aren’t just about earning credits—they’re about sparking curiosity, challenging young minds, and building a strong academic foundation.
Career Exploration
Not every student’s dream involves a four-year degree—and that’s okay. That’s why this partnership also includes opportunities for on-the-job training in areas like healthcare, technology, and manufacturing trades. With access to these programs through Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, students can gain real-world experience and explore career paths before investing thousands of dollars in higher education or certifications.
No Extra Cost to Families
One of the most remarkable aspects of this partnership is that it comes at no additional cost to families. Access to these college courses and training programs is fully included in the tuition families already pay for SJHS. This ensures every student has the opportunity to benefit from these experiences, regardless of financial background.
A World of Creativity
Through Shepherd University, SJHS students will also have access to fine arts programs, music, theatre, and more. Whether they’re drawn to performing on stage or creating works of art, this partnership provides a space for every student to explore their creative side while building confidence and expressing themselves.

Why This Matters
At Saint Joseph High School, we’re passionate about preparing students for more than just tests—we’re preparing them for life. This partnership reflects our commitment to providing an education that is bold, innovative, and beyond ordinary.
A First for West Virginia
This collaboration of two higher education institutions and a high school is the first of its kind in the state, making SJHS a trailblazer in high school education. By combining the strengths of a Catholic high school with the resources of two leading higher education institutions, we’re setting a new precedent for what high school can and should offer.
Informed Decisions, Better Futures
How many students graduate high school only to realize their chosen path isn’t what they expected? This partnership allows students to test-drive college courses and career options while still in high school, helping them make informed decisions about their futures—and saving time and money in the process.
A Competitive Edge
Whether it’s college admissions or entering the workforce, having real-world experience and college credits on a high school transcript gives SJHS students a clear advantage. They’ll graduate with more than a diploma—they’ll have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to stand out.
A Message to Our Community

“It is a great joy for me to be a part of bringing Saint Joseph High School back to life."
“This is a dream fulfilled for many of us in the community. Catholic education is a great hit and of great value. Not only are there excellent academics, but it also provides a foundation based on truth, faith, and virtues” says Father Thomas Gallagher.
For generations, St. Joseph High School was a beacon of faith, education, and service in the Eastern Panhandle . Now we will resume that tradition. This partnership with Shepherd University and Blue Ridge Community College is a testament to our mission to empower students with the tools they need to lead, serve, and succeed.
“We’re not just preparing students for the future—we’re preparing them to lead it,” Deacon Patrick Michel, Head of School for Saint Joseph High School said. “This partnership represents the best of what we can achieve when we work together for the benefit of our students and our community.”
