We believe that high school should be more than just preparation for the next step—it should be the first step toward a bright and successful future.
That’s why we’re proud to offer a historic dual enrollment partnership with Shepherd University and Blue Ridge Community & Technical College—an opportunity that sets our students apart from their peers in both college admissions and career readiness.
With dual enrollment, SJHS students can take real college courses while still in high school—earning college credits, gaining hands-on experience, and preparing for life after graduation at no additional tuition cost. It’s an extraordinary advantage that gives our students a head start on college and career success.

“This partnership represents a monumental leap forward for high school education in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia,” said Deacon Patrick Michel, Head of School for Saint Joseph High School.
“We’re giving our students the tools, experiences, and opportunities they need to thrive in both academic and career settings. It’s not just about preparing them for the next step; it’s about helping them take that step while they’re still with us.”
What is Dual Enrollment?
Dual enrollment allows high school students to enroll in college-level courses and earn credits that count toward both their high school diploma and a college degree. At SJHS, students have the opportunity to take 100- and 200-level college courses through Shepherd University and Blue Ridge CTC, without paying additional tuition.
This means that instead of waiting until after high school to explore college coursework, SJHS students can experience college learning now—while still receiving the support of their high school teachers and faculty.
Our Students Can:
- Earn transferable college credits in subjects like English, math, business, and more.
- Explore career pathways early through hands-on programs in cybersecurity, healthcare, and technical fields.
- Reduce the cost of higher education by completing college coursework while still in high school.
- Stand out in college applications with real-world college experience before they even graduate.

How Does Dual Enrollment Work at SJHS?
Our dual enrollment program is flexible and student-focused, designed to fit a variety of academic interests and career goals.
Virtual Learning from SJHS
SJHS has two dedicated distance learning rooms, allowing students to attend college courses virtually while staying in a structured and supportive environment. This means students get college-level learning while remaining connected to their high school community.
In-Person Learning
Some courses require in-person attendance to fully experience the hands-on training necessary for certain career paths.
Students interested in:
- Healthcare (CNA & Medical Training)
- Cybersecurity & Cisco Networking
- Technical & Trade Programs
…will have the opportunity to attend labs and hands-on training at Blue Ridge CTC, giving them real-world experience before they even graduate high school.
Students interested in fine arts, theatre, and music will also be able to attend in-person classes at Shepherd University, taking advantage of state-of-the-art facilities and learning from experienced professionals.
The Competitive Edge: How Dual Enrollment Sets SJHS Students Apart
1. College Readiness Like No Other
Many high school students enter college feeling unprepared for the rigor of higher education. SJHS students, however, walk in with experience. By taking college-level courses early, they develop:
- Critical thinking skills needed for college-level work.
- Time management and independence that prepares them for real-world responsibilities.
- The confidence to succeed in a higher education environment.
When applying to universities, SJHS students will already have real college coursework on their transcript, proving their ability to handle challenging academics.

“It is a great joy for me to be a part of bringing Saint Joseph High School back to life."
“This is a dream fulfilled for many of us in the community. Catholic education is a great hit and of great value. Not only are there excellent academics, but it also provides a foundation based on truth, faith, and virtues” says Father Thomas Gallagher.
2. Cost Savings for Families
College is expensive—but at SJHS, students can reduce or even eliminate the cost of several college courses before they even leave high school. With dual enrollment:
- Students earn college credits without additional tuition costs.
- Families save thousands of dollars on future college tuition.
- Students can graduate with an associate degree, career credential, or enter college as a junior—saving two full years of tuition!
This means families who take advantage of dual enrollment can significantly cut down on college expenses, making higher education more affordable and accessible.
3. Career Exploration and Early Specialization
Many students enter college unsure of what they want to study—leading to wasted time and money on courses that don’t fit their career goals.
At SJHS, students can:
- Test out different fields to discover their interests before committing to a major.
- Gain hands-on experience in high-demand careers like healthcare and cybersecurity.
- Earn industry-recognized credentials that make them job-ready before they graduate.
Instead of waiting until college to explore their interests, SJHS students graduate high school already knowing where they want to go next.
About Saint Joseph School
Saint Joseph School is a Catholic educational institution dedicated to academic excellence, character formation, and faith-based learning.
